We are fascinated by the world of jewels, and this month, we celebrate a brand that puts the GCC on the map: La Marquise. We spoke with Nishith Shah, the brand’s CEO, to gain insight into its values and creations, showcasing its many collections.

OHLALA – How did the brand start, who is behind it and what’s your core inspiration?
Nishith Shah – La Marquise’s story begins in 1980, with one of our founders and his journey into the world of diamonds. Starting as an apprentice in diamond cutting and manufacturing in Mumbai, he learned the craft with one belief above all else: quality is non-negotiable.
That foundation shaped everything that came after. Around the same time, an Emirati gentleman, raised in Dubai with a deep love for the Arabian souks and a fascination with jewellery, was carving his own path. Two very different journeys, but built on the same values. When they eventually met in Dubai, the connection was immediate. They shared the same principles, the same obsession with craftsmanship and the same vision: to create a jewellery brand that controlled every step of the process in-house, from gemstone to finished piece. In 1986, they officially launched La Marquise Fine Jewellery. Today, I have the privilege and responsibility of carrying that legacy forward. What inspired me is that this brand was built on expertise, integrity and a genuine love for the craft. My role is to honour that foundation while evolving La Marquise for a new generation of clients, without ever losing sight of what makes us truly different.
OHLALA – Who is the woman who wears La Marquise?
Nishith – The La Marquise woman is a marquise herself and that is actually the essence behind our name. A marquise is a woman of distinction, someone who carries herself with elegance and confidence. She is fashion-forward and knows exactly what she wants. She doesn’t follow trends; she sets them. She has an eye for the finer things in life, but she also values authenticity. She wants jewellery that reflects her personality; pieces that are bold yet refined, timeless yet contemporary, with unmatched quality.

OHLALA – How do you see the jewellery scene in the GCC?
Nishith – The GCC is a truly exciting market to be in. Despite the challenging geopolitical conditions in the boarder region, the local business environment remains remarkably healthy and resilient. Governments across the GCC are pro-business and supportive, creating a stable, confident foundation for growth. Culturally, the region has always had a deep affinity for jewellery. Much like Asia, jewellery here is deeply tied to important occasions: weddings, celebrations, gifting and that tradition remains as strong as ever. What’s particularly exciting is the explosion of emerging talent. We are seeing a wave of fresh, independent designers with real vision and reach, creating beautiful and distinctive work. It’s very vibrant, creative scene, and we are proud to play a role in it, not just as a brand, but also as a manufacturer. And then there is the sheer variety the GCC offers, from 14-, 18- and 22-carat gold to every style and category of jewellery imaginable, catering to both residents and tourists from across the world. Within just a few kilometres, you can find virtually every type of jewellery in the world. It is vibrant, diverse and only going to grow.
